Q: Can psychologists treat patients using vision therapy (e.g. Oculus VR headset)? Are they legally able to do this?

A: Under Michigan law “vision therapy” or “low vision rehabilitation services” may be performed by an occupational therapist, if the services are provided “pursuant to a referral or prescription from, or under the supervision or comanagement of, a physician licensed under part 170 or 175 (MD or DO) or an optometrist licensed under part 174.” (MCL §333.18301).

This means a psychologist should not be performing any vision therapy (including by use of an oculus VR headset), unless the psychologist is also a licensed occupational therapist providing the therapy pursuant (i) to a referral or prescription from, or (ii) under the supervision of, an MD, DO or OD.
