DEA Controlled Substance CE Requirements effective June 27, 2023

Effective June 27, 2023, all practitioners seeking DEA Registration must obtain 8 additional hours of education on substance abuse identification and treatment.

Federal DEA Registration Requirements – A Summary of Allowable CE

Different from the State of Michigan licensure requirement of 1 hour of Opioid Awareness Training, below is a summary of what constitutes allowable credit toward Optometrists eight hours of DEA required substance abuse identification and treatment education.

  • Doctor of Optometry obtaining a DEA registration will be asked to attest to having completed eight (8) hours in substance abuse identification and treatment education.
    • Doctors will not be asked to present documentation of the courses taken; this will solely be an attestation.
  • COPE approved courses can count towards the eight (8) required hours.
  • Doctors can count COPE approved courses taken prior to 2023 to meet the requirements.
    • So essentially, you are able to go back in time and count courses you may have taken previously on substance abuse identification and treatment.
  • Outside of COPE approved courses, doctors can take courses approved by other bodies recognized by DEA.
    • One non-COPE option for a DEA approved course is available here.
  • AOA is working with Congress to be recognized to develop and certify education to meet the new requirements.
    • This would provide doctors with additional options (outside of COPE and the other recognized bodies) to meet the education requirements.
